Introducing a new guide to help local councils protect precious green spaces and paths, Kate Ashbrook, general secretary of the Open Spaces Society(1), Britain’s oldest conservation body, says:
‘Often town, parish and community councils (local councils) are unaware of all the extensive powers they have to deal with problems on open spaces and paths.
‘These powers are scattered in different and sometimes obscure pieces of legislation. This is why we have brought them together in one document, What local councils can do for public access to town and countryside.

Hopefully you have already heard of Slow Ways. We are co-creating the first point to point walking network in Great Britain and we need your help! Slow Ways has 8000 routes over 2500 towns and cities so there will be one near you. There are already thousands of citizens who have walked thousands of Slow Way routes but it isn't completed yet - can your team get involved?
The Treasury has released the finer details for the snappily named replacement to the Energy Bill Relief Scheme which finishes on 31st March, the details for which we have summarised below:
“We are working with County Association colleagues to build a picture of how much the 10,000 parish and town councils in England spend each year on solicitors.

SLCC they are particularly keen for students at level 4 which I can say from experience covers a range of topics that are so relevant and useful to the day to day work of any clerk whatever the size of council.
These resources have been developed with Local Councils in South Gloucestershire, but the Officer Matthew Lipton is keen for them to be used by other Local Councils.

A newly released e-learning course: Standards of Public Life is now available!

Avon Gardens Trust was one of the first of the 36 County Garden Trusts, formed in 1987 and today embraces Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Our underlying principle is to raise awareness and promote the conservation and protection of all our parks & gardens and designed landscapes, as well as researching and recording them. Crucially, we also support Avon’s primary and special schools and community gardens both through funding and advice.
