On 15 May, MHCLG launched a consultation on a package of reforms to the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).
The LGPS provides financial security in retirement to nearly seven million public servants. The majority of members are women, often working part-time and on low pay.
The consultation includes measures to:
· better understand and work to close the gender pension gap, making unpaid weeks of maternity leave pensionable with the cost paid by the employer · ensure that survivor benefits entitlement are not impacted based on sex · better understand why members opt out of the LGPS, through better data · align the LGPS forfeiture rules with those of other schemes, closing loopholes and making the process more transparent |
This consultation closes on 7 August.
